Short answer: Avoid alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before AND after pico laser sessions. Light drinking (one drink) further out is fine. Heavy drinking around treatment increases bruising, slows healing, and dehydrates the lymphatic system that clears tattoo ink.
Why alcohol matters
Bruising and bleeding risk
Alcohol thins blood and dilates blood vessels. Drinking before pico treatment increases:
- Bleeding risk during treatment (especially on hands, lips, and other vascular areas)
- Bruising around treated area
- Post-treatment swelling
Dehydration
Alcohol dehydrates. Hydrated skin tolerates pico treatment better and your lymphatic system (which clears tattoo ink) functions better when you’re well-hydrated. Dehydration slows ink clearance.
Pain perception
Alcohol affects how you perceive pain. Counterintuitively, drinking before treatment doesn’t reduce discomfort meaningfully and can make you more reactive during the session.
Healing speed
Alcohol slows wound healing across all skin treatments. Post-treatment healing of pico-treated skin happens slightly faster without alcohol in the system.
Specific timing guidance
Day before treatment
- Skip alcohol
- Drink water consistently throughout the day
- Eat a normal balanced meal
Day of treatment
- No alcohol
- Stay well-hydrated
- Take ibuprofen if needed (not aspirin)
24-48 hours after treatment
- Avoid alcohol completely
- Skin is most actively healing
- Lymphatic system is processing ink
3-7 days after treatment
- Light alcohol OK (1 drink)
- Heavy drinking still affects healing
- Hydrate well if drinking
7+ days after treatment
- Normal alcohol consumption OK
- Still avoid heavy intoxication if you can
What “heavy” means
For pico laser purposes:
- Light: 1 drink
- Moderate: 2-3 drinks
- Heavy: 4+ drinks, or drinking to intoxication
Heavy drinking specifically affects bleeding and healing — a light cocktail with dinner is much less impactful than a night of heavy drinking.
What about other substances?
Aspirin
Avoid for 5-7 days before treatment. Raises bleeding risk. If you take daily aspirin for medical reasons, discuss with your provider before discontinuing.
Ibuprofen
OK after treatment for inflammation. Avoid heavy doses before treatment.
Cannabis
Limited evidence on effects with pico laser. Some patients use cannabis for post-treatment discomfort with no documented problems. Discuss with your provider.
Recreational drugs
Stimulants raise blood pressure during treatment (more bleeding risk). Avoid for several days before treatment.
Bottom line
Pico laser doesn’t ban alcohol, but timing matters. Skip drinking the day before, day of, and 24-48 hours after for optimal results. Hydration helps your lymphatic system clear ink, which is the whole point of treatment.
